Following the announcement of the armistice, General de Gaulle speaking from London on 18 June, called on his fellow countrymen to continue the combat in a famous radio broadcast.

If the radio was a vital propaganda tool for the Nazis and Marshal Petain’s Vichy Government, from 1940 onwards, it also became an important weapon of resistance. The radio programme ‘The French speak to the French’ transmitted coded messages to the Resistance Movement. It also contributed to the gradual changing of public opinion, which early on had been mostly in favour of Pétain’s actions.
